Simulation Modeling Using Agents For Mass Customization
2004
Reconfigurable enterprises and production networks — virtual structures of manufacturing enterprises that coalesce and vanish in response to a dynamic marketplace — are one of the main enabler paradigm for mass customizable production. The design and coordination of production networks to changing market dynamics are challenging tasks. Simulation provides the ability to develop prototypes of such complex systems cost effectively and in shorter duration. This Chapter describes how simulation can be utilized in conjunction with multi agent system techniques to develop realistic prototypes of complex decision support systems for the design of coordination strategies in large-scale mass customi…
Negotiation in Distributed Production Planning Environments
2006
Mass customization and global competition push enterprises to adopt proper business models able to capture all the opportunities arising from emerging competition rules. An increasing number of industrial enterprises distribute their production capacity world wide to achieve lower production costs, lower distribution costs (due to the closer proximity to customers), and deeper knowledge of customer needs. As a drawback, coordination of the different production plants and the balance among plants and enterprise goals represent a critical issue in the network management. In this context the paper looks at the production planning problem, adopting a traditional hierarchical time-based perspect…
Production planning in reconfigurable enterprises and reconfigurable production systems
2005
Reconfigurable enterprises and reconfigurable production systems represent nowadays one of the key responses towards the organisational and manufacturing needs arising in the new era known as mass customization. The paper proposes an Agent Based approach for the production planning activities in reconfigurable enterprises, characterized by complex, articulated and geographically distributed production capacities contended by many product families and composed by reconfigurable production systems that allow quick adjustment of production capacity and functionality consenting to manufacture different products of the same part family.
Reconfigurable control of robotized manufacturing cells
2007
This paper investigates the field of manufacturing system control. The addressed subject is indeed very fascinating, due to the importance that it has reached in the last decades both at research and industrial level. On the other hand, it seems to the author that most of the complexity intrinsic to the subject itself relies on the different meanings or levels of abstraction that both the terms ''manufacturing system'' and ''control'' may symbolize. The presented research aims to face the topic in a concrete fashion, i.e., by developing a control software system for a specific, although easy to be generalized, robotized manufacturing cell. Two different development methodologies, from the c…
STRUMENTI E MATERIALI PER LA FABBRICAZIONE DIGITALE IN ARCHITETTURA/INSTRUMENTS AND MATERIALS FOR DIGITAL MANUFACTURING IN ARCHITECTURE
2017
The article describes tools and materials available today for digital manufacturing in architecture, offering a wide overview of 3D printing techniques and how it…
UML design and AWL programming for reconfigurable control software development of a robotic manipulator
2006
The goal of the presented research is to face the topic of reconfigurable control software development in a concrete fashion, i.e., by presenting a control software system development approach which has been used for a specific, although easy to be generalized, robotized manufacturing cell component. In particular, a methodology for the control software development of a planar robot (2-degrees of freedom) is presented, from the conceptual design to the actual implementation. The methodology suggests UAL and object-oriented modeling and programming techniques for the design phase, while AWL programming language run by a PLC for the implementation phase. The analysis has been conducted consid…
Consumer Information Systems as Services
2017
Consumer Information Systems (CIS) are a type of information systems that provides services to consumers instead of addressing users in traditional organizational settings, such as Internet based television. Services typically involve a trade-off between achieving high service productivity and quality. The use of service mass customization to successfully address these issues of both productivity and quality in a service context is proposed. We suggest that the development of Consumer Information Systems as Services (CISaS) may achieve such service mass customization. This paper presents a conceptual framework and investigates how it applies to a set of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) o…
TECHNOLOGICAL DESIGN. THE INNOVATION IN THE METHOD
2018
The book presents reflections on the centrality of Design in the discipline of Technology of Architecture and on the need to adapt the design method to the innovation of thought implemented by the research world. The theme of the Innovation in the Method of Technological Design is an interesting challenge that in this volume has been addressed considering the complexity of the levels of thematic depth, opening up to critical reflections, proposals for tools and illustration of case studies that show the breadth, relevance and multidimensionality of this issue. The era of digital and information technology have significantly influenced the way of doing and thinking in architecture and this e…
The Car Resequencing Problem with Pull-Off Tables
2011
AbstractThe car sequencing problem determines sequences of different car models launched down a mixed- model assembly line. To avoid work overloads of workforce, car sequencing restricts the maximum occurrence of labor-intensive options, e.g., a sunroof, by applying sequencing rules. We consider this problem in a resequencing context, where a given number of buffers (denoted as pull-off tables) is available for rearranging a stirred sequence. The problem is formalized and suited solution procedures are developed. A lower bound and a dominance rule are introduced which both reduce the running time of our graph approach. Finally, a real-world resequencing setting is investigated.
